During starry nights, and away from light pollution, Holmen Husky is the ideal arena for viewing the aurora borealis.

Alta is called “The City of the Northern Lights” for a reason as there is a high probability of seeing them due to our location above the Arctic circle. The northern lights season is from the middle of September to the middle of April.

Between November 26 and January 15, the sun remains below the horizon, but the Polar Night brings its own unique light. At midday, a bright twilight illuminates the snow-covered landscape, making it much brighter than you might imagine. The Polar Night in the Arctic is far from the complete darkness found at night closer to the equator.

We recommend bringing a layer of wool underwear, 100% wool is the best. It is also wise to bring a wool sweater, wool socks, and a wind and waterproof winter jacket. We will provide you with a thermal suit, mittens, hat, and boots if necessary. *we have shoe sizes from EU 36 and up, therefore children should bring winter shoes.

Typically the first snow comes in November. By the end of the month, the conditions are normally ideal to start our winter dog sledding season. During the no-snow months, from September, we start training our dogs and offering experiences using a special cart made specifically for dry land mushing.

• Minimum age of 16 years old to be able to drive independently    
• A reasonable level of fitness, where the guide will determine if you can operate a sled/cart safely.    
• If you feel that you are unfit or are unsure of whether you can drive a sled, please inform our team at Holmen Husky before arrival so that we can evaluate your situation and determine possible extra precautions.

We do not have a kitchen or cooking area for guests. However, upon request, it could be possible to use an outdoor open fire for cooking over the bonfire.
