Brilliant family adventure in the Arctic

If your family love nature, animals and activity in the outdoors, this is one extraordinary experience you should jump at if you can! We went on a three night weekend dogsledding adventure with our two daughters aged 9 and 10 and all four of us adored it. The landscape on the Finnmarksvidda Mountain Plateau is incredibly beautiful and gliding along through it with just the sound of the dogs' paws on the snow is spellbinding. Holmen Husky Lodge gave us excellent, clear instruction and just the right amount of support so that we really built our confidence in handling the wonderful dogs. And the dogs are just lovely; each with their own individual character that is a joy to get to know during the trip, yet each alike in being professionally trained so that at all times even my youngest daughter felt 100% safe patting them and working with them. My daughters learned so much from the great examples set by the strong, practical, highly skilled young adults who run the trip, including terrific young women who really inspired my girls, and all the staff had a great sense of fun, so the trip balanced beautifully that growth through learning and overcoming challenge that makes a trip satisfying and the social side that makes it so enjoyable. We were not ever cold, thanks to the excellent suits, hats and gloves that Holmen Husky provided us with and complemented by the helpful list of gear that they had advised us to bring. In addition, the tipi accommodation (we stayed in the two called Lynx and Moose) were by far the most beautiful space I have ever slept in. The view of the snow and the sky through the huge panel window was just glorious and sleeping next to a flickering wood fire in such a comfortable white linen bed is not a chance you get very often. We were generously fed throughout the whole trip and I loved it that the guides would come and hang with us a bit towards the end of dinner; they were so generous with their time and it was such good fun. Of course, keep in mind that the dogs are very loud when they are excited and longing to run at the start of a trip, and also that you need not to fuss over getting your hands dirty when handling the dogs, but as long as these elements are not difficult for you, then I can't imagine who wouldn't love this trip. Thank you so much Holmen Husky Lodge and all the lovely friends we made there- we miss you guys and wish we were back there now!

We left a piece of ourselves in Alta

I cannot really put the experience we had at Holmen into words. How we were welcomed by the owners and especially guides, it felt like like a trip with friends. This week was something we will never forget. Not the hospitality, not the people and certainly not the 97 dogs, greeting us every morning like we had been there for years.Thank you all! We will be back.

Weekend Husky sledding with Holmen Husky Lodge

We left Outback Australia 47 degrees to Holmen Husky Lodge, a cool -18! Erik picked us up from Alta airport and took us to the lodge, welcomed with homemade fresh waffles and Trine... who is an absolute barrel of laughs and so so helpful. Afternoon relaxing, settled into our beautiful tipi with log stove for heat, lecky blanket in the bed.... they truly had thought of everything. An evening ride followed with the huskies for a taster of the weekend to come. Wow those dogs are 200%. Food over the whole weekend was amazing, 3 courses, full breakfasts, just what you need in the cold. Such a relaxed, chilled out atmosphere at the lodge as well. The trek up to the Finnmark Plateau was an experience of a lifetime, huskies are the most amazing animals. Our 2 guides, Chloe and Phil.....FANTASTIC. Dedicated, fun and husky loving. Our overnight stay at the lodge was heaven sent after our 30km sled ride through snow, wind and a full arctic show. After helping to feed and bed down the huskies we managed to defrost and thaw out to then see the Northern lights, which we had seen at Holmen Husky the night before. If you want an arctic adventure dog sledding this would be the best trip for you.
