Dog Carting Tour

Season: 01 September - 01 December
Duration: 3 Hours
Depending on Weather Conditions

When the temperatures fall, before the snow does, we take our guests out in dog carts instead of sleds. After all, mushers train their dogs in more ways than with the sled. The carts are like dog sleds with wheels and bike handles. They offer just as much fun and might even be easier to drive.

The ride takes you through the Arctic countryside as Autumn turns to Winter in a splendid display of colours across the varied scenery. From the Arctic forest to the river banks of the Alta River, it’s the perfect activity for this time of the year.

Our dog carting tour includes:

  • Transport to/from Alta city centre
  • Thermal suits, hat, gloves and boots (if the weather requires it)
  • Instructions in how to handle and steer the dog cart
  • Approximately 60 minute long dog cart ride through the Arctic forest and along the Alta river (including a mid-way switch of driver/ passenger for those who are interested)
  • Dog cuddling at the end of the trip
  • Hot drinks and snacks, storytelling and puppies around the crackling fire in our big traditional Sami lavvo.

Price per adult: 1450 NOK

Price per child (under 12): 625 NOK

Season: 15. September - 15. December

Duration: 3 hours

Departure/return: 10:00/13:00, 16:00/19:00

Please bring: sunglasses, woollen underwear (preferably 100% wool), wool/fleece sweater, camera NB! 2 persons on each cart!

Wonderful experience...with Huskies!

We went in mid September. It was a late summer/long Autumn. The northern lights were on show( just not for us). It is technically "off season".There was a risk of it being too hot to run the Huskies. But luckily everything went in our favor, The crew at the lodge looked after us so well and we went out on the Carts through the woods to the river. We had an awesome time! We took the puppies down to the river. So many cuddles and playtime with the dogs. The howling is something to hear! The tipis were very comfortable and with the assistance of the electric blanket cosy and warm. Each morning we had a great breakfast. We used the sauna (our first one!) which was great as we went on one of the hikes up into the hills the day before. The lodge was an excellent place to chill(watch out for the bears!). Special mention to Lilly for going to extra lengths for us. My only tip is if you are just dropping by, hire a car, it may be cheaper than ordering a few taxis and the buses weren't that frequent. All in all one of the best experiences we have had...ever!

Four of us went on this Husky Experience, there wasn't sufficient snow so we went on two carts, and in no way did this spoil the magic. From the time of making enquiries via the internet, to the time we arrived, we were kept updated on what we were likely to expect..On arrival we had a very informative talk, and were issued with proper clothing to protect against the weather and anything the dogs may have put on the ground for us to walk in. In fact the ground was spotlessly clean. The dogs were already leashed to the carts and were raring to go. After approximately 30 mins or so, we stopped at a prearranged place so that the passenger could experience the thrill of driving the sledge/cart too.At the end of the ride, we returned to camp for photo opportunities, an a warm drink around an open fire in a large wigwam type of structure. All of the staff from beginning to end were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I really want to go back for another try, that's how good it is.Full marks to Holmen Husky, and thank you for some unforgettable and happy memories.

What can I say? The only thing that would have made this husky cart safari more fun would have been snow! It was one of the best things I've ever done, 25 minutes of my life I will never forget, I took the dog brakes first then my husband took the swap option half way, I really should have just told him no, we can't swap! I want my own husky cart and my own 6 crazy dogs to pull it so I can do this every day! Photos do not do this activity any justice but here's some anyway!
